Step One - Craft a wooden pickaxe

A wooden pickaxe can mine stone, coal and cobblestone.

To craft a wooden pickaxe you need to do the following:

1. Find trees and get two wood logs. In the craft menu craft each log into 4 planks.

2. Then craft two planks into 4 sticks, by placing them vertically over each other:

3. Craft a wooden pickaxe by placing three planks in the top row of the 9x9 craft menu and 1x stick in the middle cell and 1x stick in the one below it:

Step Two - Craft a stone pickaxe

A stone pickaxe can mine stone, coal and iron ore.

To craft a stone pickaxe you need to do the following:

1. Mine 3x cobblestone

2. Craft a stone pickaxe by placing three cobblestone in the top row of the 9x9 craft menu and 1x stick in the middle cell and 1x stick in the one below it:
